Introducing Changes in Evaluation of Medical Students in Korea

Abstract
In order to minimize the sacrifice of medical students by the quota system in which more students are admitted into medical schools than will be allowed to graduate, which has been the national standard since 1981, a student centered evaluation system model of medical education was devised and changes in the method of student evaluation were made accordingly. The model includes both formative and summative evaluation methods.
The philosophy of this alternative is to exclude the unwanted side effects of the quota system created by the accumulation of repeating students.
It includes : 1) a lessening of repetition of a school year for students who received slightly lower scores, and expulsion of students considered hopeless and 2) a lessening of repetition for students with one "F" and expulsion of students with two or more "F"s.
